I was, however, puzzled that the present-day Akilla speaks with a Jamaican accent while his 15-year-old flashback incarnation (played by the excellent Mpumlwana in a dual role) doesn't. Although set in Toronto, it might as well be taking place in Detroit or Atlanta which was probably intended. Director Charles Officer's filmmaking debut covers a lot of ground, not always smoothly-the timeframe spans 1995-2020-but soulful performances, especially by Williams, help finesse the narrative flaws.
